Club Development Plan
NAME OF CLUB: Caithness Rugby Union Football Club DATE: 1st May 2012
Introduction
Caithness Rugby Football Club was formed in September 1962 from a combination of Dounreay personnel and the local population. It was in these early stages that rugby was introduced in to both high schools in the county. Always a leading light in the north, the club, after a regular run of league and cup successes in the 70s and 80s, finally acquired national league status after winning the North district title in 1991/92. In order to sustain these successes it was decided in 1990 to form a junior rugby section, initially at mini level. The other junior age groups from S1 – U18 were run by the local high schools. Over the years the junior club has had varying periods of success, including reaching the latter stages of the Caledonian age grade competitions and the schools having some big games against the top teams in the country. They have also produced a regular supply of players to regional pathway rugby, and also one or two to international level. In more recent times, the junior teams have struggled for numbers and been less successful, which has been in contrast to the senior club, who following successive promotions, gained promotion to National League Division 2, where they remained for five seasons prior to the recent SRU league restructuring– ranking them in the top 50 or so teams in the country.
Caithness RFC is based at Millbank, Thurso, and shares its location with Thurso swimming pool and fitness centre. The rugby club offers two playing pitches and a grassed training area.
The Rugby Club aims to offer rugby to members from five years of age through to adult teams, playing competitive and recreational rugby at all levels.
Club Structure
The Club is organised into a Senior Club and a Junior Rugby Club. Both sections are managed via Management Committees with a nominated and elected Chairperson. Both sections elect their own officers and officials to best manage their part of the Club, in the most efficient and effective manner. Both sections manage their own funds independently of each other.
The Senior Club
The Senior Club competes in Scottish Rugby Union Caledonia Division One. Commencing 2012-13 season, the senior executive will take responsibility for the older Junior Rugby Club Squad at U18 level as part of a transition from junior to adult rugby, plus operating a 1st XV and hopefully a 2nd XV. The 2nd XV will play a series of friendly fixtures, while the U18s will play in the appropriate league structure.
The Junior Rugby Club takes responsibility for the Micro (P1-3), Mini (P4-7) and Youth Teams; U15’s (S3) and U16’s (S4). For organisational purposes, the Under 6s and Under 7s are combined. Only children who have attained their 5th birthday at the start of any season are allowed to play competitive games under the auspices of the current SRU Continuum. The club supports rugby at S1-2 level in the two county high schools, where some form of rugby in the curriculum, plus boys S1-2 teams playing inter school competitions with other local high schools, forms an important stage of rugby development. In addition there are currently a group of girls playing in Thurso High School who we are going to form in to a team, and we plan to get a similar thing going in Wick High School. Currently the junior club have two mini training sites at Wick High School and Millbank in Thurso for micro (P1-3) and mini (P4-7). These players attend and play in various rugby festivals held within the Highland region. Players within the U15 and U16 squads play in the appropriate Caledonian league structure.
Caithness RFC employs, together with Scottish Rugby, a Club Development Officer. The Club sees this position as an important means of developing the whole club, particularly the junior club. This position is dependent on on-going and future funding. The club is fully represented and is actively involved in the Highlands and Caledonian club rugby. The Club seeks to take a full part in the wider local sports and rugby community through the development of a new Sport Club Facility, estimated to be completed some time in the near future
